Mark Cuban Attributes Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving Deal to NBA Insider | Times of India NBA News”

Mark Cuban, the billionaire and part-owner of the Dallas Mavericks, has shared the inside story of how the NBA team acquired Kyrie Irving. In a podcast interview, Cuban revealed that it was ESPN insider Shams Charania who played a crucial role in the deal which saw Irving move from the Brooklyn Nets to the Mavericks in the 2022-23 season.

The acquisition of Irving significantly transformed the Mavericks and brought them back into competition for the championship. During the conversation on Semafor’s Mixed Signals podcast, Cuban detailed how Charania’s influence exceeded merely breaking news, indicating that Charania was instrumental in both the initial trade and the following contract extension due to his excellent rapport with Irving’s agent.

Cuban also unveiled the complexities of such negotiations, citing past unsuccessful trades for legends like Kobe Bryant and Paul Pierce that fell apart at the last moment, marking the unpredictability of these transactions. Information typically leaks once agents and players join the negotiations, and that’s when insiders like Charania lend their expertise.

Irving’s move to the Mavericks during February 2023, where he teamed up with Luka Doncic, proved to be a positive spin for Dallas. Despite missing out on the playoffs in that spring, their fortunes changed in the following year.

Irving went on to sign a three-year, $119 million extension during one offseason. In his three seasons with the Mavericks, he averaged 25.5 points per game, underlining the merit of the risky trade. Further changes to the team saw Doncic transferred to the Los Angeles Lakers and Irving shouldering the responsibility as the main player.

Before a torn ACL injury in the last season, the 33-year-old guard had impressive stats including an average of 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. Upon his projected return in early 2026, the rejuvenated Dallas roster featuring Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and Cooper Flagg, will certainly be one to watch for basketball fans.
