Max Verstappen Clinches Pole Position at Baku; Unexpected…

During the Saturday qualifying session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2025 at the Baku City Circuit, there were several unexpected events including multiple red flags and surprise rain. Several F1 drivers crashed into the barriers, but Max Verstappen managed to finish the race without crashing. Joining him on the front row will be Williams driver Carlos Sainz, and placing third on the grid is Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson, who used to be a teammate with Verstappen.

The race had rain during the latter stages and coupled with strong winds, it affected team strategies before the rain came. Verstappen, confident after Monza, aims for another win after securing pole position. Despite the many red flags which affected tyre condition, he managed to hold onto pole.

Carlos Sainz and Liam Lawson starting among the frontrunners on the grid will undoubtedly make the race interesting.

Last year’s winner, Oscar Piastri, ended a promising session with a crash in the final segment of qualifying, placing him ninth. He speculated whether it was him trying too hard or the unexpected rain that caused his crash. Charles Leclerc, who showed promise, broke his pole-winning streak this year in Baku when he crashed in the final segment, landing him in tenth place. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, had a disappointing Saturday, dropping out in Q2, despite topping FP2 on Friday. Williams driver Alex Albon also had a challenging session as he was the first to crash into the barriers. Kick Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg, along with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto of Alpine, crashed into the barriers and retired during Q1. Oliver Bearman also retired after brushing the wall during Q2.
