Updated on: Sept 05, 2025 10:03 am IST
Lionel Messi shared doubts about playing in the 2026 World Cup, citing age concerns but highlighting his excitement as the event draws close.
Lionel Messi has sparked significant speculation following what might be his last match for Argentina on home turf. In a commanding performance, Messi scored two goals, bringing Argentina to a 3-0 victory over Venezuela during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. As an eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient, Messi was unmatched on the field, ensuring a simple win for already qualified reigning champions. The match, likely his final game in the Argentina jersey at the Estadio Monumental, was filled with emotions.

After the game, Messi raised uncertainty about his future, questioning his involvement in the next year’s World Cup. Despite realizing that the 2026 World Cup might not be feasible due to his age, the Inter Miami star expressed enthusiasm and a drive as the tournament approaches. He emphasized living in the present, dedicating equal effort and passion to each day and game.
Messi commented, “Like I mentioned before regarding the World Cup, I don’t believe I’ll participate in another. The most sensible expectation, considering my age, would be that I won’t make it.” Yet, with the tournament nearing, I am eager and motivated to be part of it. I continually take things day by day and game by game, focusing on the present,” Messi elaborated post-match.

The World Cup-winning captain emphasized taking life step by step, noting the importance of being earnest with himself. He admitted that he hasn’t settled on a final decision regarding the 2026 World Cup, stating that his choice will hinge on his physical state after the MLS season and preseason.
“Day by day, aiming to feel good and most importantly, being truthful with myself. When I’m at my best, I thoroughly enjoy it, but when I’m not, it’s not satisfying at all, so I would prefer avoiding participation if I’m not well. As of now, I haven’t decided about the World Cup. I’ll approach it game by game, conclude the season, undergo preseason preparations, and within six months, a decision will follow. Ideally, I’ll have a fruitful preseason in 2026, end this MLS season positively, and then I’ll decide,” he concluded.
