MLB Star Wander Franco Confined in Dominican Republic for…

Wander Franco, a 24-year-old Major League Baseball player, was detained in Baní, Dominican Republic on September 9, 2025. His family was concerned about his mental health, and the police escorted him to a private clinic upon their request.

A video capturing the moment of the police’s entry was aired on Franco’s Instagram live stream which was abruptly ended when the phone dropped. Officers have clarified that this case is solely focused on Franco’s mental health and is unrelated to any new charges.

Franco, once considered a future star, is currently suspended from Major League Baseball and is dealing with several legal woes, including past cases in his home country. Colonel Diego Pesqueira confirmed Franco’s detention. He stated Franco was moved peacefully to the clinic in Baní, his hometown.

A few months prior to this event, Franco was found guilty of sexually abusing a minor in June 2025. He was given a two-year suspended sentence, implying he won’t be jailed unless he violates court rules. Franco is also charged with the possession of an illegal firearm, an open case that his lawyer Teodosio Jáquez has remained silent about.

In 2021, Franco snagged a $182 million, 11-year deal with the Rays, marking him as one of the most promising young players in baseball. He performed in 265 games for Tampa Bay where he hit 30 home runs and made 130 runs. He earned the title of an All-Star in 2023.

However, in August 2023, allegations shook his reputation when a purported relationship with a 14-year-old girl surfaced. His mother was accused of making monetary transactions to the girl’s mother, leading to the latter’s arrest on charges of money laundering. Despite facing a trial in Santo Domingo starting June 2, 2025, Franco claims to be in active training, although his future in the League remains uncertain.

The police have reiterated that Franco’s recent detention is unrelated to these issues and concerns his mental health. Franco’s family has requested privacy during this time. The MLB has yet to disclose if Franco will be allowed to return to the game.
