NBA Analyst Predicts $51m LA Lakers Star’s Future Amid Luka Doncic Contract Extension”

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed their star player, 26-year-old Luka Dončić, to a three-year, $165 million contract extension, marking a new era for the franchise. However, this move may lead to tough roster decisions, with forward Rui Hachimura possibly emerging as a potential trade candidate.

The Lakers’ front office, led by Rob Pelinka, has been busy shaping the roster for the 2025–26 season. In addition to Dončić’s extension, they have added significant pieces in free agency, including former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton and 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. These moves aim to build a team around the star duo of Dončić and 21-time All-Star LeBron James. However, despite these enhancements, they still have concerns around rebounding and interior dominance.

Rui Hachimura, a 6-foot-8 forward and former No. 9 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, had a productive 2024–25 season. However, his lower rebounding numbers could be of concern, especially for a team that finished 26th in the NBA in rebounds per game last season.

There are speculations that Hachimura’s future with the Lakers may depend on the team’s needs in the trade market. According to ClutchPoints’ RB Hayek, the only scenario that could lead the Lakers to trade Hachimura would be a major need for an top-tier player, or someone who can win the board battle. Given the perimeter shooting provided by Dončić, James, and Austin Reaves, the Lakers might prioritize a stronger frontcourt presence over more scoring wing.

Reasons that the Lakers might trade include addressing their weakness in rebounding, maximizing the championship window granted by Dončić’s contract, and leveraging Hachimura’s shooting and versatility to acquire a valuable big man or defensive specialist. As the Lakers plan their next championship run, they will need to decide whether Hachimura’s skill set fits their new priorities or if his value is best used to acquire a more dominant interior presence.
