NBA Star Haywood Highsmith Moves from Miami Heat to Brooklyn Nets Post Knee Injury Recovery”
The Miami Heat recently traded Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets for a protected 2026 second-round selection in a deal during the NBA summer. This move was aimed at lowering the team’s salaries to avoid the luxury tax zone. Highsmith, a forward, is currently recovering from right knee meniscus surgery, which was anticipated to cause him to miss eight to ten weeks of action.
Highsmith, who played an average of 24.6 minutes per game and scored a mean of 6.5 points, including 1.2 three-pointers, was an instrumental part of Miami Heat’s rotation. His move to the rebuilding Brooklyn Nets comes as there are doubts about his participation in the season’s opening night, due to his recent surgery which took place on August 8th.
The Miami Heat now have 13 players on standard contracts for the forthcoming season, two less than the NBA’s regular-season cap of 15 players on standard contracts, after trading Highsmith without getting another player in return. By trading Highsmith, the team would drop from approximately $1.3 million above the luxury-tax threshold to roughly $4.3 million below it, given Highsmith’s nearly $5.6 million salary. This was a strategic move by the management to avoid the two recent seasons’ luxury tax and potential penalties for crossing the threshold four times in five seasons or a single season.
In the meantime, Highsmith suffered a knee injury while training and is expected to rejoin the team on October 17th, after a ten-week recovery period. However, he will miss out on the team’s training camp and preseason schedule, and might require some time to regain his form.
