NFL Experiences Kickoff Boost but Struggles with Onside Kicks

The NFL has seen a rise in returns due to modifications made to the dynamic kickoff, resulting in more plays and fewer injuries. However, onside kicks continue to be an issue that may warrant changes.

There have been 877 kick returns this season, marking a significant increase from the previous season. The return rate of 79.3% is the highest since 2006, making it the second highest in terms of yards through the first seven weeks in history.

The NFL has also moved touchbacks on kicks that reach the end zone on the fly from the 30 to the 35 to encourage more plays and returns. Despite concerns about low kick return touchdowns, the league is closely watching the lack of successful onside kick recoveries.

This season, teams have been allowed to attempt onside kicks any time when trailing, compared to only in the fourth quarter last year. However, opponents must be notified ahead of time, thereby eliminating the element of surprise.

The changes in the kickoff formation have also helped reduce injuries, which were frequent due to high speeds and physicality of the game. According to Jeff Miller, NFL executive VP of player health and safety initiatives, the blocks and tackles are occurring at slower speeds, which has resulted in fewer injuries. However, the increased involvement of kickers in tackles is a point of concern.

Meanwhile, the debate on player safety on different surfaces has been reignited following season-ending knee injuries to New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers and Pittsburgh Steelers special teams captain Miles Killebrew. Despite this, there hasn’t been a significant difference observed in injury risks on grass vs synthetic surfaces. The league is now focusing on improving consistency and performance of synthetic surfaces in terms of hardness, injury restitution, and traction.

An investigation into the Giants’ handling of a concussion protocol situation is still ongoing, according to the league.
