NFL Intensifies Security Measures in Response to New York Shooting Incident | NFL News Times of India

The National Football League (NFL) has increased its security measures in response to the fatal shooting incident at its New York City headquarters on July 28, 2025. Shane Tamura instigated the attack, leading to the death of himself and four others, while also leaving an NFL employee severely injured. As a result, the NFL sent out a memo to all 32 teams urging for an immediate enhancement in security.

The NFL revealed three new security measures in the memo. Firstly, teams must update threat assessments to detect and manage risks at an earlier stage. Secondly, there must be armed police or guards stationed inside all team and league offices when players or staff are present. Lastly, weapons screening procedures should be implemented at the buildings’ entrances, similar to the security checks at stadiums.

The NFL stated, “There is no higher priority than the safety and the sense of security of our players, coaches, staff, and everyone who works in and around our facilities.” The league acknowledged the substantial commitment required to execute these changes but emphasized the critical role of safety.

Shane Tamura began his shooting spree in the lobby, killing an off-duty NYPD officer, a Blackstone executive, a real estate company employee, and a security guard. Investigators also revealed that Tamura permitted a woman to leave unharmed earlier before fatally shooting another person and then himself on the 33rd floor of the building. In a note discovered later on, Tamura speculated he might be suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), blaming the NFL for covering up the risks of concussions and expressed intent to donate his brain for further research after his death.
