NFL News: Canadian Prodigy John Metchie III Shakes Up Super Bowl Offense with Surprise Eagles Trade
John Metchie III, the Canadian wide receiver, has been traded from the Houston Texans to the Philadelphia Eagles in an unexpected move. This news comes from ESPN insider Adam Schefter on August 18, 2025.
The Philadelphia Eagles, current Super Bowl champions, will receive John Metchie III while in return, the Houston Texans will get tight end Harrison Bryant along with a fifth-round draft pick in 2026. The Eagles will also receive a sixth-round draft pick in 2026 from Houston. The last season saw Metchie III recording 254 receiving yards and a touchdown. He’s now set to be a part of an already strong group of wide receivers in Philadelphia.
Metchie III will join A.J Brown and DeVonta Smith in the loaded Eagles offense. At just 24 years old, the Brampton native will also team with Jahan Dotson and Johnny Wilson, providing quarterback Jalen Hurts with another trusted option. Metchie III’s NFL career began when the Houston Texans drafted him as the 44th overall pick in the 2022 Draft; however, he was unable to play his first season due to a leukemia diagnosis.
His much-anticipated debut occurred in 2023, where he ended with sixteen catches and 158 yards. In 2024, Metchie III improved his performance and recorded 254 yards with a touchdown. He’s now at the tail end of his $8.07 million four-year rookie contract and is looking to make an immediate impact in Philadelphia.
Harrison Bryant, having previously signed with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, is now headed to the Houston Texans. Throughout his career, the 26-year-old tight end has achieved 89 receptions, 791 yards and 10 touchdowns. His transfer is part of what the Texan’s head coach DeMeco Ryans refers to as a need for more competition and depth at tight end before training camp starts.
Metchie III is scheduled to arrive at the Eagles training facility in Philadelphia soon and may join his teammates for their first preseason practice on August 22, 2025. He has gained respect among the league’s young players, especially given his comeback from leukemia. The Eagles are hoping to reach another Super Bowl with the addition of the former Alabama great to what is already a powerful offense.
