NHL News: Warning for Canadiens against potentially problematic trade of Reinbacher for Ducks’ McTavish
Trade rumors are circulating involving Montreal Canadiens prospect David Reinbacher and Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish, according to recent buzz among Canadiens fans. The Anaheim Ducks team is reportedly looking for a big return, with Reinbacher being discussed as a potential centerpiece.
However, Habs analyst Eric Macramalla doesn’t believe such a trade would benefit Montreal. He has emphasized on social media that losing Reinbacher, who possesses top-tier potential, would harm the future of the Canadiens team, saying “David Reinbacher is a right shot top four D man with top pairing potential. Mason McTavish fits the bill as a second line center for the Habs but trading away Reinbacher creates a hole on the Habs blue line. Won’t work.”
Despite not yet having debuted for the Canadiens, Reinbacher, the fifth overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, is being seen as a key part of the team’s future. At only 20 years old, he offers size, mobility, and offensive instincts, all of which are rare in a right-shot defenseman. However, trading Reinbacher would risk not only weakening Montreal’s defensive line but could also endanger future team balance.
McTavish, on the other hand, has shown potential to become a reliable top-six center, a role the Canadiens have had difficulty filling. Despite this, the prospect of letting go of Reinbacher and potentially a first-round pick may be too high a price for the Canadiens to pay.
With the Canadiens currently rebuilding, the team would benefit from McTavish’s offensive abilities. However, retaining Reinbacher, given his potential to become a leading defenseman, may be the smarter decision, unless Anaheim revises their asking price. Therefore, Montreal should hold onto their promising prospect and avoid rushing into a trade that could potentially backfire in the future.
