No ODI Captaincy Talks for Shreyas Iyer: BCCI to HT; Shubman Gill Tipped as Rohit’s Successor.
Indian cricket is undergoing major changes, with various leadership roles replacing veterans who are stepping away from the game. Now, rumors are circulating regarding the future of the One Day International (ODI) captain role. Current ODI captain Rohit Sharma’s possible retirement has sparked debates about his potential successors, triggering speculations around young talent Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill.
Iyer has gained massive recognition for his excellent captaincy skills in recent Indian Premier League matches. However, a statement from Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), confirms that no discussions have been conducted about Iyer as a successor.
BCCI officials are looking into the potential of Shubman Gill for the role despite the strong public support for Iyer. Being almost five years younger than Iyer and already set in crucial leadership roles in the cricketing fraternity, Gill is seen by the BCCI as a suitable long-term captain for Team India.
Though Rohit, at 38, has already retired from the Test and T20I formats, he is yet to indicate his retirement plans for ODIs. While Iyer and Gill are being considered as possible ODI captain successors, the final decision will be influenced by India’s requirements ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
For the time being, Rohit will retain his captaincy for the upcoming three-match series in Australia this October.
