Olympic Boxer Imane Khelif Contests Gender Verification at…
Algerian boxer and Olympic Champion, Imane Khelif, who found herself at the heart of a controversy during the 2024 Paris Olympics, has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge a gender test introduction. CAS issued a statement on Monday confirming that Khelif is opposing the world boxing federation’s decision which restricts her participation in upcoming world boxing events without an initial genetic test.
Imane Khelif was among two boxers who stirred a gender eligibility uproar at Paris Games. The other was Taiwanese boxer, Lin Yu-ting, who is set to compete in the world championships starting this week in Liverpool. Both athletes earned Olympic gold, but Khelif’s initial match, which upset her Italian challenger, brought about widespread critique from public figures such as US Vice President JD Vance and author of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling.
In the previous month, Khelif dismisses assumptions by her ex-manager that she was retiring from the sport. Insisting false reports of her retirement from boxing, the 26-year-old clearly stated on Facebook that such claims were untrue. She then accused her former manager, Nasser Yesfah, of betraying her trust and her country with his false and harmful declarations. She finalized her statement by confirming that he no longer represents her in any capacity.
