On-Court Blunder Leaves Sinner’s Cincinnati Rival Solo and Unsponsored

Unseeded Terence Atmane storms into the semi-finals in Cincinnati, defeating top ATP players.
French qualifier Terence Atmane, unsponsored and largely unnoticed, has made a sensational entry into the Cincinnati Masters semi-finals. The 23-year-old left-hander has surpassed expectations; starting the week ranked 136th globally, Atmane shocked fans by defeating World No. 9 Holger Rune 6-2, 6-3 in the quarter-final on Thursday. This victory, accomplished in a mere one hour and 13 minutes, came after his earlier upset against World No. 4 Taylor Fritz.

By achieving these consecutive victories, Atmane has become the first qualifier since 2015 to reach the Cincinnati Masters semi-finals, and the first French player to do so since Richard Gasquet in 2019.

Atmane’s rise started from the qualifying rounds, securing his spot in the main draw through two challenging matches. His commanding performance against Rune, marked by 14 forehand winners and strategic play, signals a shift from a season where he had notched just one tour-level victory before this event.
Next, Atmane will compete against World No. 1 and reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals. Regardless of the outcome, Atmane’s ranking will climb 67 positions to No. 69 in the ATP men’s singles rankings, a career milestone. His tournament earnings now stand at USD 332,160, exceeding the USD 310,376 he had accumulated throughout the season prior to Cincinnati.
“I’m speechless about my current emotions,” Atmane expressed following his quarter-final win. “Being in a Masters 1000 semi-final, breaking into the Top 100, and winning the prize money I did tonight is overwhelming. It’s a significant boost for my career.”
Why is Atmane competing without a sponsor?
Atmane’s performance also serves as personal validation, having lost his Asics sponsorship in September 2024 after being spotted on the court in Shanghai wearing Nike shoes. Since then, he has pursued his career without a clothing or shoe sponsor, relying solely on his resources.
In the meantime, Sinner earned his place in the semi-finals with a decisive 6-0, 6-2 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime, marking it his first win against the Canadian in their three encounters. This win extended Sinner’s hard-court win streak to 25 matches, placing him among a select group that includes Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray.
