Ovechkin Reveals Why He Won’t Share NHL Ice with Son Sergei | Times of India NHL News

Alex Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, has finalized the rumor about ever playing professionally alongside his eldest son, Sergei. The six-year-old displayed exceptional skills at the Ovi Cup gala match in Moscow, scoring two goals and igniting discussions of a budding father-son duo in hockey’s biggest league.

Following Sergei’s impressive performance, Ovechkin was inquired about the possibility of playing on the same team as his son. In his response to Dilshad Lomovskikh from RB Sports, the Washington Capitals captain disclosed that the dream had already come true in his distinct way. Ovechkin reflected upon the memorable moment when he went out on the ice with Sergei a year ago. He added that he doesn’t see himself ready to play professional hockey at 55.

If it had transpired, Ovechkin and Sergei would have been the second-ever father-son pair in NHL history, following Gordie Howe and his sons, Mark and Marty.

Ovechkin’s hockey legacy is clearly influencing his children, though they seem to be positioning themselves differently on the ice. Ovechkin disclosed in a 2024 interview that Sergei is leaning towards the forward position, while younger brother Ilya, prefers playing as a goalie. Both boys have shown a natural knack for the game, often engaging each other in fun matches during family practice sessions.

Entering his 21st NHL season, Ovechkin, now aged 40 or older, is one of only three active players. His career peaked when he broke Wayne Gretzky’s record becoming the league’s all-time leading goal scorer, solidifying his position among hockey’s legends. Since his first overall draft by Washington in 2004, Ovechkin has marshaled 1,623 points through 897 goals and 726 assists in 1,491 matches. His crowning glory was leading the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup title in 2018.

Although fans may never witness Ovi and Sergei sharing NHL ice, the young Ovechkin’s early talent suggests that the family name could continue to be prominent in the hockey landscape.
