Patrick Mahomes on Worthy’s Injury and Chiefs’ Rough Beginnings: ‘A Collective Responsibility’
The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a double blow during their season-opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, losing both the game 27-21 and top receiver Xavier Worthy due to an injury. The incident took place during the Chiefs’s third offensive play where Worthy collided with tight-end Travis Kelce. The receiver was taken out of the game with a possibility to return in the second quarter, but he was then ruled out. Chiefs’ Head Coach Andy Reid hasn’t provided an update on Worthy’s condition before he went for an MRI scan.
Speaking about the game, Patrick Mahomes stated, “Yeah, I mean, obviously, other guys had to step up…but you can tell it took us a bit to get going. It’s definitely important. Those (Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy) are two of our best receivers, and they’re two great receivers in this league, and obviously threats down the field.” Mahomes also remarked on the collective responsibility to protect the receiver and time the throws right. He believes the game results might have been different if he had made certain throws earlier.
The Chiefs are set to face the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, in their next regular-season game on September 14.
