PSG and Barcelona Enjoy Goal Galore in Champions League Showdown
During an eventful night in the Champions League on Tuesday, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) scored seven goals, Barcelona netted six, and Erling Haaland tallied his 24th goal of the season. To add to the mayhem, PSV Eindhoven trounced the Italian champion Napoli 6-2, with Arsenal and Inter Milan also putting up significant victories to retain their flawless records in Europe.
The highlight of the night was the defending champion PSG’s 7-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, a wild match which took both teams down to 10 players. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s 6-1 triumph over Olympiakos represented a solid comeback from their loss to PSG at the beginning of the month.
In other matches, Premier League leader Arsenal scored a 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring a brace, while last season’s finalist Inter won against Union Saint-Gilloise with an identical scoreline. Haaland’s goal contributed to Manchester City’s 2-0 victory at Villarreal.
Fermin Lopez netted a hat trick and Marcus Rashford scored twice as Barcelona won in dominant fashion. Following a controversial red card for Olympiakos’ Santiago Hezze in the second half, Barcelona capitalized on their man advantage to add four more goals to their tally, completing the rout.
It was Lopez’s first career hat trick, which included a goal from Lamine Yamal from the penalty spot. Olympiakos struggled to respond after Hezze’s second yellow card in the 57th minute, a decision that was disputed due to replays appearing to show that he did not make contact with Marc Casado.
Kazakhstani team Kairat managed to secure its first point in Europe’s premier club competition with a goalless draw against Pafos.
