PSG Overpowers Barca with Tactical Precision
Kolkata: In just five minutes, Achraf Hakimi ventured into Barcelona’s half, but the effort didn’t lead to fruition. However, as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) amped up their strategy in the second half, the right-back persistently tested Barcelona’s elevated defensive line. This strategy paid off when Hakimi assisted Goncalo Ramos’s 90th-minute goal, securing a 2-1 victory.

PSG stands as the only team to defeat Barcelona three times consecutively away in the Champions League. Yet, Wednesday’s match could have shifted had Dani Olmo opted to move to the right in the 63rd minute; instead, his shot was blocked by Hakimi. Similarly, Ferran Torres, when denied by Illia Zabarnyi’s slide, might have found Marcus Rashford unmarked if he had looked up.
Torres, nonetheless, scored for the home team in the 19th minute, following Rashford’s precise third-game assist. According to Opta, this marks Barcelona’s 45th consecutive match scoring since last December, achieved even with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha absent.
The match, fueled by both teams’ high-risk-high-reward tactics, naturally featured errors, such as Vitinha’s misplaced pass intercepted by Lamine Yamal for Barcelona’s goal. Nuno Mendes received a caution for a foul on Yamal and narrowly avoided a second one.
Following a dynamic and balanced first half, where Senny Mayulu leveled the score in the 38th minute, Barcelona seemed to lose momentum. By the 52nd minute, Nuno Mendes had effortlessly launched a long pass to Mayulu, one of five starters under 20. In the 53rd minute, Hakimi advanced into Barcelona’s box, driving in with determination. Mendes and Hakimi synchronized overlaps by the 75th minute, with Hakimi getting nine touches inside the opposition’s penalty area.
Known for a high defensive line, Barcelona under Hansi Flick have been operating even further up the pitch compared to 2022-23, as revealed by The Athletic.
Currently, Barcelona players are positioned 35 meters from their goal, a strategy that proved effective against most opponents. The compressed pitch allows quicker counter-pressing and disrupts short-passing teams. Last year, it successfully caught Kylian Mbappe offside eight times.
Despite these tactics, PSG’s technical prowess, even with three primary forwards and Marquinhos missing, exploited Barcelona’s high line. “Our team is wonderfully youthful, featuring several 17 or 18-year-olds,” remarked PSG head coach Luis Enrique. Although not among the youngest, Lee Kang-in showcased his dribbling skills, maneuvering past Barcelona defenders only to hit the post with his shot.
PSG’s attack was spearheaded by their dynamic full-backs, Mendes and Hakimi, noted by Enrique for their extraordinary positioning and passing skills. These players capitalized on the space Barcelona left, with Mendes setting up Mayulu’s goal after surging past Jules Kounde.
In the second half, the spotlight on Yamal dimmed, and poor tracking back facilitated PSG’s equalizer. Echoing observations about Harry Kane’s ball recovery from a Bundesliga newsletter, Yamal’s defensive contribution requires enhancement.
Upon Ramos’s goal, Flick’s disappointment was evident. “With a 1-1 scoreline, better defensive structures were imperative,” he stated to the press. “This experience is a lesson that we must improve upon against high-caliber teams.”
