R Ashwin Fumes Over Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Omission from Asia Cup Squad in Favor of Shubman Gill.

Ex-Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his dissatisfaction over Yashasvi Jaiswal’s exclusion from the India Asia Cup squad. Ashwin highlights Jaiswal’s skill and performance in test cricket, and argues that Jaiswal should be a mainstay in the squad for all the formats. Jaiswal was instead put into the reserves and Shubman Gill was reinstated into the team as vice-captain after his hiatus. This decision shocked Ashwin.

Ashwin believes Yashasvi Jaiswal’s omission is unjustified since he was India’s back-up opener for 2024 T20 World Cup. Jaiswal had been performing well in the T20Is, accumulating a total of 723 runs from 23 matches with an imposing strike rate of 164.31. Gill was also chosen over Jaiswal for the Asia Cup, marking Gill’s return to T20I cricket after July 2024.

Ashwin empathized with selectors and agreed that selection was a difficult task. However, he stressed that transparency should be maintained and the reasons behind not picking certain players should be clearly communicated.

While acknowledging Gill’s credentials and performance in IPL, Ashwin questioned how one could justify excluding Jaiswal who was a part of the T20 World Cup squad. He also questioned Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from the squad.

According to Ashwin, Gill’s inclusion implies that Sanju Samson would not be playing further. Samson played as an opener during Gill and Jaiswal’s unavailability. He also suggests that there should be diversification in captain appointments across different formats instead of leaning on the same player for all formats. Ashwin expressed understanding over the selectors eyeing Gill as a potential future leader but reiterated that the same person being appointed as captain for all formats should not be a mandate.

Ashwin concluded by expressing apprehension over Samson’s place in the team as Gill was selected as vice-captain, highlighting that his position is now under threat. He stressed that Gill will play and also open the batting instead.
