Repeated Neglect: Shreyas Iyer Suffers Yet Another Omission in Asia Cup, Stats Validate

Shreyas Iyer’s exclusion from the Asia Cup 2025 squad has raised questions about the judgment of the All India Selection Committee. Despite impressive performance in ODIs and IPL 2025, Iyer has not been included in the key squad or even in the reserves for the tournament in UAE. This decision clearly indicates that he is not considered a part of future plans for the T20 World Cup next year, as players like Riyan Parag have been preferred over him.

Iyer’s T20I debut was back in 2017, and he has had a challenging journey, often lacking consistent backing from the management. Despite being a more regular part of the T20 squad between 2019 and 2021, he was left out of the final 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

In the context of the upcoming Asia Cup, Iyer’s absence can be viewed as a part of the preparation by Suryakumar Yadav’s team for the big ICC event next year. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has stated that Iyer hasn’t done anything wrong and needs patience for his opportunity, a message which slightly dims his prospects for featuring in next year’s T20 World Cup.

Despite his struggles, Iyer’s career boasts impressive numbers including 51 match appearances and 1,104 runs with an average of 30.67 and a strike rate of 136.13, and a highest score of 90 from 47 innings. Iyer was last seen in a T20I in 2023, and since then has had to work hard in domestic cricket to get back to the selectors’ vision.

Although his efforts resulted in a recall to the ODI team for the England series and the Champions Trophy, it was his performance in the IPL of 2025 with the Punjab Kings that truly stood out. He led the team to their first IPL final since 2014, and made history by becoming the only captain to take three different teams to the tournaments final.

However, despite his notable performance, Iyer was not chosen for the Asia Cup squad. The team’s faith lies instead with other players who have managed to capitalize on their opportunities. Nonetheless, Iyer’s exclusion remains controversial as his recent T20 form strongly advocates his inclusion, if nothing else, at least amongst the reserves.
