Russell Wilson Criticizes Broncos Coach Sean Payton’s Post-Game Conduct as ‘Classless’

The New York Giants’ backup quarterback, Russell Wilson, accused Denver Broncos’ coach Sean Payton of classless conduct, after taking a swipe at him postgame. Wilson, who lost his starting position to the rookie Jaxson Dart after a disappointing 0-3 score to start the season, retaliated at Payton over his remarks during social media interactions.

Payton had subtly suggested he preferred to face a match against Wilson than Dart. Following the Broncos’ historic 33-32 comeback win on Sunday, Payton stated that the Giants ‘found a spark with’ Dart, who had become the starter. He suggested that he had conversations with New York’s owner John Mara about relishing the opportunity to face Wilson instead.

The former Seahawks quarterback traded further jabs at Payton, referencing the coach’s controversial “Bounty Gate” scandal during his tenure with the New Orleans Saints. From 2009-2011, it was discovered that the Saints were rewarding players for hits against opponents with the intention to injure them, resulting in Payton’s suspension for a year.

Wilson had joined the Broncos three years ago when Payton returned from his stint in broadcasting. They signed a five-year, $245 million extension contract and achieved a 10-7 win-loss record after an 8-9 initial score. The duo split after their solitary playoff match. Wilson, who will be 37 in a month, spent his last season with Pittsburgh before signing as a free agent with the Giants.
