Sanjog Gupta: The Indian Mediator in Asia Cup Controversy |…

Sanjog Gupta, the CEO of ICC, was involved in mediation with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over a dispute concerning match referee Andy Pycroft during the Asia Cup. The PCB accused Pycroft of acting in a bias matter during the India-Pakistan match on September 14, specifically his advice against the post-match handshake, a common protocol. Pakistan had requested that Richie Richardson replace Pycroft for their remaining matches. However, the ICC concluded that Pycroft had not violated any officiating standards.

Gupta, who took office as ICC CEO on July 7, began his career as a journalist before moving up through leadership roles in content, programming, and strategy in Star India (now JioStar) since 2010. As Head of Sports at Disney & Star India beginning in 2020, he led portfolio expansions with the goal of long-term growth and operational efficiency.

Regarded for steering innovations like multi-language coverage, digital-first formats, and expanded coverage of women’s games, Gupta contributed to the growth of ICC tournaments, the IPL, and domestic leagues including the Pro Kabaddi League and Indian Super League. Gupta has nearly 15 years of experience with the Star TV Network. Despite the increase in digital consumption, Gupta acknowledges that television remains the dominant platform, offering much room for growth.

Amid the ongoing controversy, Pakistan earned their spot in the Super 4s with a 41-run win over the UAE in Dubai on Wednesday.
