Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty and Lakshya Sen Claim Second Place at Hong Kong Open

India narrowly missed two titles, finishing as runners-up in both men’s singles and doubles events at the Hong Kong Open Super 500. Lakshya Sen and the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty gave commendable performances, ending second-best in their respective categories.

Lakshya was defeated by the world’s number 4 player Li Shi Feng with a scoreline of 15-21 12-21 in the men’s singles final. Despite a solid initial start, Lakshya could not fend off Li’s persistent attacks, ultimately giving way to his opponent’s dominance.

Meanwhile, Satwik and Chirag, recent World Champions bronze medalists, lost to China’s Olympic silver medalists Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in an hour-long men’s doubles final. After securing an initial lead, the Indian pair failed to maintain momentum, losing at 21-19 14-21 17-21.

Following the results, Chirag expressed satisfaction over their performances, acknowledging the opponent’s superior play while optimistically looking forward to the next opportunity. As for Lakshya, this final was his first since the Syed Modi Super 300 last November.

Despite his previous edge in the head-to-head record against Li, Lakshya couldn’t offset his opponent’s control of their current match, particularly conceding to Li’s mixed strategy of tight net play and steep smashes.

For Satwik and Chirag, this was their first final appearance since their victory at the Thailand Open 16 months ago. This defeat ends their unbeaten streak in Super 500 finals, having previously won all four that they participated in.

Despite the losses, the Indian players are poised to return stronger, with lessons learned from the Hong Kong Open promising to influence future game plans and strategies.
