Shafali Verma’s Cricket Journey: A Tribute to her Idol Sachin…

Shafali Verma’s Cricket Journey: A Tribute to her Idol Sachin…

The last time Sanjeev Verma, father of Indian cricketer Shafali Verma, closed his jewelry shop for four days was in 2013 when Sachin Tendulkar was playing his last first-class match in Rohtak. At that time, Sanjeev was compelled to bring his young daughter, Shafali, to the stadium where Tendulkar was playing. This came after the young girl had purchased a poster of the cricketer from a fair held during the Dussehra festival.

Shafali Verma, who was not even a standby and was with the Haryana state team in Surat for the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, got an unexpected call after an injury to the in-form Pratika Rawal during India’s last league match against Bangladesh.

Barring the inaugural U-19 World Cup final in 2023, she had never won a final until the ICC Women’s World Cup Final in Navi Mumbai where she played a significant role in India’s victory.

Shafali expressed her fear of playing in the final due to her previous disappointing performance in previous finals. However, she was reassured by her father who reminded her how she had innovatively overcome personal hurdles, such as cutting her hair to resemble a boy so she could play cricket and her first experiences at Ram Narain Academy.

Additionally, Shafali underwent several transformations concerning her fitness and gameplay to improve her competitive edge in cricket. She worked on her bowling, strike rotation, and minimized playing cross-batted shots. She also ran 37 singles and five twos to go with seven boundaries and two sixes during her 78-ball 87 in the final game. Her efforts helped derail South Africa’s chase as she picked up two crucial wickets.

Shafali is still young at 21, but she had a dream of playing cricket for 20 years for her country when she was just nine. This dream was inspired by watching Sachin Tendulkar, who continues to inspire her to this day. At the post-match presentation, she shared her awe for Tendulkar, and how seeing him in the stands during the world cup game gave her confidence and a sense of calm. The chants she was used to hearing for Tendulkar have now started to be chanted for her as well.
