Shreyas Iyer Unveils Reason for Red Ball Format Hiatus |…
Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer discussed the significance of managing workload across cricket formats to maintain intensity. Iyer claimed that particularly in red-ball cricket, balancing the workload is crucial. After India’s two-wicket loss to Australia in their second ODI at Adelaide, he spoke about his techniques and approaches to workload that have aided him in maintaining consistency and self-assurance. Previously this month, due to back concerns, Iyer requested a six-month hiatus from red-ball cricket, which received the green light from the BCCI.
Managing intensity during long fielding hours in red-ball cricket emergencies has been a challenge for Iyer. He has come to recognize that in ODIs, rest intervals and recovery time make this easier. Based on his experiences, he has strategized his approach to support his intensity. Iyer also mentioned his recent shift back to an upright batting stance. According to him, this alteration has empowered his ability to adapt to different surfaces.
Iyer emphasized that his latest technique is not a recent change. He had been eyeing an upright stance from last year, primarily for pitches with higher-than-average bounce. He detailed how working with his coach has benefited his batting style. The Mumbai-born cricketer also highlighted that it’s considerably important to change and adapt according to pitch conditions.
Reflecting on his 118-run partnership with Rohit Sharma in a tough match against Australia, he said that while Hazlewood’s bowling was challenging, their strategy was to maintain an aggressive approach while also rotating the strike as much as possible with the aim of pressurizing the bowlers later on. He attributed Australia’s victory to well-executed batting, particularly by the young Cooper Connolly.
Iyer also talked about his transition from domestic cricket to international cricket, saying it’s about acclimatizing to the conditions and staying match-ready. However, he did not see much of a challenge in the transition. The boost he received from the local cricket scene and the India A series greatly helped him during his stint in Australia.
Despite India’s loss, Iyer commended the Australian bowlers and shared his progress since his last ODI against England. He felt the pain of losing and mentioned that the Australian bowlers capitalized on early wickets. Iyer, however, highlighted his determination to give his all whenever he steps onto the cricket field.
