Shubman Gill’s omission solidifies India’s Asia Cup prospects, says Test Captain: Report
According to a report, India’s Test Captain Shubman Gill’s chances to be part of the Asia Cup team are diminishing. Both the team management and the selectors led by Ajit Agarkar seem to have reached a consensus that he does not fit into their T20 plans. Even though Gill had performed exceptionally, leading India to a 2-2 draw in England, he is unlikely to be a part of the T20I team for the Asia Cup.
Some experts had previously predicted that Gill might return for the T20I series and even lead the team for the shortest-format of the game. However, new reports suggest he won’t be on the flight to Dubai next month for the tournament starting on September 9.
Before the selection meeting on August 19, there were series of informal talks, exploring every combination to fit Gill into the team. However, with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson proving their worth as openers in the past year, the management preferred to retain the pair. Ideas of replacing Tilak Varma with Gill were also discussed, but the management decided it was unjust to bench the No. 2-ranked ICC T20I batter.
Regarding Gill’s inclusion, a BCCI source reported, “If Gill is included then he will straight away bat at the top, and if he doesn’t get a game then there is no point in having him. At the same time, it will be unfair on Sanju, who has done well.”
Proposals to replace Yashasvi Jaiswal with Gill were also turned down, with the team preferring to retain Jaiswal as the third opener. The final decision will be made after a round of discussions with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on August 19. Ajit Agarkar will announce the squad at a press conference.
