Sonia Citron Shatters Records, Shaking Up WNBA Rookie of Year Competition | NBA News Times of India”
WNBA Rookie Sonia Citron has shaken up the Rookie of the Year race following her record-breaking performance. Playing for the Washington Mystics, Citron emerged as the highest-scoring rookie during the game against the Connecticut Sun, outpacing previous record-holder Chamique Holdsclaw’s 1999 score of 525.
Although the Mystics came up short in the game, Citron took the spotlight with her individual achievement. Her current total score now stands at 537, making her the franchise’s highest-scoring rookie. This score surpassed Holdsclaw’s record, which remained unbeaten for almost 26 years despite attempts by other players such as Kiki Iriafen and Alana Beard.
Competition is not lacking for the Rookie of the Year award with Dallas Wings’ rookie Paige Bueckers leading the race. Bueckers reached 500+ points within 28 games, marking her a likely winner of the award. However, with nine more games left in the season, Citron might overtake Bueckers.
Washington Mystics has deployed two rookies, Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron, capturing attention with their gameplay. Iriafen averages a season score of 12.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. Citron, on the other hand, has crossed the 500-point score threshold and is providing serious competition to Bueckers.
