Strategic Financial Resilience: The Cornerstone of Super League Kerala’s Success, Says MD Firoz Meeran
The second edition of Super League Kerala (SLK) kicks off today, featuring a thrilling match between defending champions Calicut FC and Forca Kochi FC at the EMS Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode. Last year’s inaugural tournament had a significant impact, with various teams supported by celebrities, filling stadiums and highlighting the sports entertainment void in Kerala. In this exclusive interview, Firoz Meeran, Managing Director of Super League Kerala, shares how the League is envisioned as a long-term investment poised for growth in the coming years.

Excerpts from the Interview:
What inspired the creation of SLK in Kerala?
Kerala has always been a stronghold for football, along with West Bengal and Goa. Despite this, there was a lack of exposure for our players due to the absence of a state-level league. SLK addresses this gap and aims to produce national-level players, following the legacy of football icons like IM Vijayan and others.
Will Season 2 be bigger than Season 1? How?
Absolutely, Season 2 will surpass the previous season in many ways. This year, we’ve added Thrissur Corporation Stadium and Jawahar Municipal Stadium Kannur to ensure every club has a dedicated home ground, which will bolster support. Additionally, matches will be broadcasted on Sony Ten 2 and streamed for free via Sports.com, enhancing global reach and viewer experience.
Key learnings from Season 1?
One significant lesson was the importance of each club having its own home ground, fostering club identity and fan support. We realized the potential for SLK to become a prominent league with top talents, and we strive to provide high levels of football to engage audiences.
Impact of SLK on Kerala football?
In the first season, 90 Kerala players participated, with numbers expected to grow. The emergence of new academies and grassroots initiatives is elevating the region’s football standards. SLK’s structured approach is helping players excel in national competitions.
How is SLK performing financially?
SLK is focused on long-term sustainability, even if it means short-term financial deficits. With a budget managed across centralized operations, we aim to sustain the league for the next 25-30 years, ensuring disciplined spending.
What role do celebrity co-owners play?
Having celebrities like Prithviraj Sukumaran and Sanju Samson involved boosts visibility and community engagement, promoting Kerala’s football ecosystem as part of a social entrepreneurship initiative.
Future branding and player recognition plans?
SLK is committed to making players local heroes, enhancing opportunities for clubs and players, and offering better recognition and remuneration. Future expansions may include teams from Wayanad and Kasargod.
