Tauson Defeats Keys, Proceeds to WTA Canadian Open Semi-Finals

On Aug 06, 2025, Danish 16th seed Clara Tauson ousted the Australian Open champion, Madison Keys, in the quarter-finals of the WTA Canadian Open. Tauson advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Tauson proved her dominance in the opening set, swiftly capitalising on Keys’ double fault to gain a significant advantage. Tauson held her own, winning over half the second serves and keeping Keys at bay for the majority of the match.

The Dane is scheduled to play the subsequent semi-final for a place in the finals against the winner of another match between four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka from Japan and Ukraine’s 10th seed, Elina Svitolina.

The defeat of Keys is reflective of a larger trend within the Montreal seeds, as the top five and seven of the top 10 seeds were ousted before the quarter-finals.

At just 22, Tauson is vying for her fourth career WTA title, following her successes at the Lyon and Luxenbourg Opens in 2021 and at the Auckland Open earlier this year.

In previous matches between Tauson, Osaka, and Svitolina, Tauson led with two victories against Svitolina and one against Osaka. Her strategies and performances in these matches are likely to shape the forthcoming semi-final.

Aside from her impressive record, Tauson also eliminated the Polish second seed, Iga Swiatek, during the fourth round, putting her a single win away from her second WTA 1000 final, after losing her first to Mirra Andreeva in Dubai, earlier this year.

In her match against Keys, Tauson executed multiple breaks in her favor during the first set. Keys, in an unfortunate move, began the second set with a double fault, essentially providing Tauson with a break. Tauson maintained her stride, securing her victory without facing a break point in the second set.

In the other semi-final, 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and the 18-year-old Canadian sensation, Victoria Mboko, are set to compete.
