His cause of death was announced only two months after his initial diagnosis. Following his majestic baseball career, Greenwell took up duties as a Lee County commissioner in Florida, a position he took up despite being ill. He is being remembered as a baseball legend and an exemplary community leader.

Greenwell’s baseball career spanned from 1985 to 1996 during which he continued to be part of the Boston Red Sox team. He had made into the All-Star team twice and won the 1988 Silver Slugger Award. His impressive career statistics include a .303 batting average, 130 home runs, and 726 RBIs. His contribution to the Red Sox was celebrated by inducting him into their hall of fame in 2008.

After retirement, Greenwell devoted himself to public service and business. He set up a family fun park in Cape Coral, Florida, and became involved in farming. In 2022, he was appointed as a county commissioner by Governor Ron DeSantis, a role he continued after winning the election in 2024. His pragmatic approach to commissioning won the respect of the people.

Greenwell’s loss has been deeply mourned by the Boston Red Sox, his fans, his son Bo Greenwell, and other community members. Fondly known as ‘The Gator’, his funeral details have not yet been announced.
