Van Gisbergen Tipped by Team Owner for Strong Performance in NASCAR Playoffs
Shane van Gisbergen, the rookie driver from Auckland, New Zealand, is expected to make a deep run in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, as per his team owner’s prediction. Van Gisbergen, cheerful about his record-setting rookie season, has indeed made impressive strides. His triumphs include being the third driver to win four consecutive Cup victories on road or street courses, and setting the largest margin of victory in Watkins Glen history.
Despite being a rookie, van Gisbergen has already claimed four victories, surpassing seven-time champion Jimmie Johnson and three-time champion Tony Stewart’s records.
However, the road to the championship might be a challenging one for the rookie driver, who has struggled on oval tracks which make up most of the season. Justin Marks, owner of Trackhouse Racing and the person who put his reputation at stake to bring van Gisbergen onboard, is optimistic about the No. 88 Chevrolet making a deep run in the playoffs. Marks attributes this optimism to the driver’s dedication and perseverance. The team owner believes that despite the challenges posed by oval tracks, van Gisbergen has the potential to be a serious championship contender.
On another note, there is uncertainty over when Connor Zilisch, the Xfinity Series points leader, will be able to return from a broken collarbone, an injury he sustained while celebrating his series-high sixth victory. According to reports, with approval from NASCAR, Zilisch could potentially skip the final three regular-season races and still be eligible for the Xfinity playoffs. Despite the setback, van Gisbergen is hopeful about Zilisch’s return, citing his own experience of racing with a broken collarbone.
