The Golden State Warriors might be in a good position to land one of the most decorated players in NBA history, LeBron James, who will become a free agent after the 2025-26 season. James, who is set to earn $52.6 million in the final year of his Lakers contract, will hit the open market for the first time since 2018. The Warriors, known for recognizing his talent and leadership, might have a realistic chance to bring the four-time champion to the Bay Area.

According to an NBA executive talking to DallasHoopsJournal.com, Golden State is a top contender, alongside the Cleveland Cavaliers and Dallas Mavericks, to court LeBron. The executive said, “Cleveland, Dallas, and Golden State, those are the three teams. All three would have loved to trade for him this offseason, but he never requested a trade and he makes too much money. Once he hits the open market, they will court him. I have no doubt in my mind.”

The Golden State Warriors’ interest in LeBron is no secret. They reportedly tried to trade for him during the 2023–24 season, but the Lakers didn’t agree to make a deal. LeBron shares a close friendship with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, two key figures of Golden State’s championship core.

LeBron turns 41 in December, making him the oldest active player, and whether he chooses to extend his career into the 2026–27 season or retire will be a key topic next summer. Despite his age, his performance remains top-notch. Last season with the Lakers, he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists.

If the Lakers star decides to continue playing beyond next season, Golden State could finally turn years of mutual respect into a groundbreaking partnership — one that could shift the league’s balance of power. James would bring championship experience and leadership, playmaking ability to complement Curry and Green, proven scoring at an elite level, and global marketability for the Warriors brand.
