Why do KHL Referees Face More Bans Than NHL Counterparts? | NHL News | The Times of India

In an unprecedented disciplinary action, the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) has permanently banned a referee for allowing a controversial goal during a recent game between SKA St. Petersburg and Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg.

The referee let the goal stand despite video evidence which showed that the puck entered the net through a hole on the side rather than crossing the goal line in a conventional manner. This decision allowed SKA to score a goal that was widely believed to have been illegitimate.

This incident has fuelled discussions about why KHL referees are more susceptible to such bans compared to their NHL counterparts. Unlike the NHL, KHL referees do not have a union to guard against retaliation from the league, and therefore their careers can be more easily jeopardized.

Such a significant action by the league underlines how seriously the KHL is upholding institutional accountability. This stern action attracted a lot of attention, with some applauding it as an commitment to fair and correct officiating, and others criticising it as overzealous and likely to instill fear in other referees, potentially affecting the flow of future games. Despite differing opinions, it is clear that KHL referees are held to the same stringent standards of fairness as the players and coaches.
