Why Jorge Costa Denied Jose Mourinho Access to Porto’s Locker Room
The sudden tragedy of Jorge Costa, the former captain of FC Porto, has upset the football world. A key figure in the 2004 Champions League-winning team guided by Jose Mourinho, Costa reportedly sufered a heart attack at Porto’s training center on Tuesday. He was 53 years old.
In the light of this loss, an old video of Mourinho has resurfaced on social media, where he praised Costa for his unique leadership qualities. Mourinho narrated an incident where, upon being 2-0 down at halftime against Belenenses, he was prevented by Costa from entering the locker room to scold the team. Instead, Costa took on the task himself and after that told Mourinho to coach them. This match ended with Porto winning 3-2 and Costa, a centre back, scored two of the goals.
Describing Costa, Mourinho said, “This was not just a captain. He was a true leader.” He stressed the difference between a captain and a leader, stating that leaders cannot be bought or created but when a team has one, it is one step ahead.
Labelled as ‘Tanque’ (Tank) and ‘Bicho’ (Beast), Costa represented Porto in 383 games and won a total of 24 major trophies, including eight league titles and the UEFA Cup. He was also awarded the Portuguese Golden Ball in 2000. His career extended to playing for Charlton Athletic in the Premier League and managing teams in Portugal, France, India, Tunisia before returning to Porto in 2024 as the Director of Football.
Costa suffered a cardiac arrest at Porto’s training ground before being rushed to Sao João Hospital, where he was unable to recover.
