The Boston Celtics, an 18x NBA Champion team, was recently sold to private equity mogul William Chisholm. The sale of the franchise marked a momentous occasion as it signified a change in hands after more than 20 years. Despite the sale, former owner Wyc Grousbeck still remains part of the team.

Chisholm, alongside his investing team, secured the deal in March 2025, making them the new majority owners of the Boston Celtics. The franchise was valued at a staggering $6.1 billion – a record price for an American professional sports team. The deal was approved unanimously by the NBA and was officially finalized on August 19.

With the deal now sealed, Chisholm will serve as Governor while Wyc Grousbeck and Aditya Mittal serving as Alternate Governors. Additionally, Grousbeck will continue to act as the Co-Owner and CEO of the team alongside Chisholm. The Boston Celtics’ Managing Board will also include Grousbeck, Mittal, and several other individuals. It’s also worth noting that the global investment firm, Sixth Street, is a major participant in the investment group.

Being a Boston native and lifelong fan of the Celtics, Chisholm spoke passionately of his excitement at becoming the majority owner of his favorite team. He expressed his eagerness to partner with Grousbeck, Brad Stevens, and the rest of the team in pushing the outstanding organization forward.

With the Celtics keen on pursuing their 19th NBA championship next season under new leadership, fans alike are thrilled and looking forward to where this new chapter leads.
